Economic background

Located in the thick, black soil zone of the Parkland Region, Canora is surrounded by farmland that has few limits in terms of crop or livestock production.

As a result of being situated in "The Heart of Good Spirit Country", tourism has become a more important aspect of Canora's development, offering great opportunities. The town is centrally-located among and minutes away from several lakes and attractions, including Crystal Lake, Good Spirit Lake, Madge Lake, the National Doukhobour Heritage Village and Forts Pelly and Livingstone.

Boasting a population of more than 2,000 persons, Canora offers an economical cost of living. The average cost of a dwelling in town is $55,109.

Economic Development Commission

The Canora Economic Development Commission and Good Spirit Regional Economic Development Authority are the local community development and economic organizations that serve Canora and district.

The commission is a volunteer group that consists of local residents, elected officials and business people working towards a positive future for the town and its neighbors. The organization undertakes projects to enhance the viability of the community and encourages, supports and assists in the development of positive community, business and tourism initiatives.

Small business loans

The commission also administers two small business loans associations, offering small business loans of up to $15,000 to assist businesses with start up, expansion or improvement costs. The interest rate on the loans is currently four per cent and applications are available at the town office.

Property for sale

The Town of Canora has new and serviced lots available for sale on Parker Crescent. Preliminary work has commenced on two new subdivisions as well, one near the golf course and the other at the south end of Fourth Street.

2008 Tax concession policy

The Town of Canora does not have a business tax.

Its 2008 tax concession policy is as follows:

SPECIFIC CONCESSIONS

  1. Construction of a new building or structure:

a)   If vacant Town-owned land is purchased, the value attributable to the virgin land value shall be given free of charge but the value attributable to the services to the land shall be paid, plus the following tax cancellations shall be applicable:

1st year       100 per cent tax cancellation

2nd year      75 per cent tax cancellation

3rd year      50 per cent tax cancellation

b)   If a new building or structure is constructed on privately owned land, the above tax concessions will apply to the building or structure provided the gross assessment is greater than 25,000.

  1. Construction of an addition to an existing building or structure:

1st year      100 per cent tax concession

2nd year      75 per cent tax concession

3rd year      50 per cent tax concession

The above cancellations apply to the addition only provided the gross assessment of the addition is greater than 25,000.

  1. Purchase a commercial or industrial building or structure and operate a business there from provided it is an arms-length transaction:

1st year      50 per cent tax concession

2nd year      50 per cent tax concession

3rd year      25 per cent tax concession

The above cancellations will be for the municipal portion only.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  1. Concessions will be prorated from effective date as determined by the Town Administrator.
  2. No tax concessions will be granted where an existing business, building or structure is moved from one location to another within the Town unless the total business area, building size or structure size increases; in which case, Section 2 above shall apply.
  3. Frontage tax is not eligible for any concession whatsoever.
  4. Each tax concession granted will be in the form of a resolution or bylaw of Council.
  5. Tax concessions will not be granted on properties in arrears of taxes.
  6. Tax concessions will be cancelled and or reversed if taxes are in arrears.
  7. Council may consider other concession options for special circumstances.
