Leisure services

The Town of Canora's Leisure Services Department plays an active role in promoting, programming and implementing recreational and cultural activities designed to enhance the well-being of the whole community.

The Canora Leisure Services Board is devoted to providing excellent facilities for community programming as well as financial support to community groups through the Saskatchewan Lotteries community grant program.

Recreation facilities

All Town of Canora buildings are smoke-free.

Parks and playgrounds

King George V Park and Kiwanis Park are located on Main Street north of the curling rink and feature a climbing apparatus, including slides and sliding poles surrounded by sand and a spot for a picnic.

Canora Lions Kiddies Park is located at 333 Canora Avenue, south of the Activity Centre and features a climbing apparatus, including slides, sliding poles, swings, teeter totters and cable rides with a picnic area.

Canora Community Park is located on Fourth Street and includes fields of open green spaces containing soccer pitches and lacrosse fields.

Activity Centre and golf course

Located at 333 Canora Avenue, the Activity Centre and adjacent nine-hole grass green golf course are run from April to October by the Canora Golf and Country Club.

 With a seating capacity of 80 persons, the Activity Centre serves as the course clubhouse, featuring a pro shop, licensed premises, snack bar and attached deck. The golf course, which under went a major renovation in 2001, including five new fairways, offers a driving range and power cart rental.

The Activity Centre is available for rent during the winter months and accommodates all types of meetings and social events.

Outdoor swimming pool

Located at 928 Third Street, Canora swimming pool is a heated junior Olympic sized pool with a separate paddling pool for little tykes. Open June to September, the facility offers Red Cross swimming lessons, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and other Lifesaving Society courses. Early bird, lane, adult, fun and midnight swims and birthday party rental rates are available.

Tennis Court

Located east of the swimming pool in the Community Park, the tennis court consists of two asphalt courts, both resurfaced and upgraded in 2004.

Beach volleyball court

Located east of the swimming pool in the Community Park, a sand-filled beach volleyball court was constructed in 2004. Players may sign out equipment from the swimming pool.

Skate park

Located on Fourth Street, a quite popular skate park provides a venue for in-line skaters and skateboard enthusiasts alike.

Canora Civic Centre

A modern five-hundred seat artificial ice facility, the Civic Centre is located on Main Street and offers both a heated lobby and bleachers. During the skating season that runs from October to March, the rink offers free public skating, shinny and birthday party rental rates.

The Civic Centre is available for rent during the off-season and is suitable for housing trade shows and other special events.

Sylvia Fedoruk Centre

Located on Main Street, the curling rink contains four sheets of ice and is operated from October to April by the Canora Community Curling Club. The rink concession is located in the main-floor lobby and a lounge upstairs provides a great view of the ice surface.

The Centre doubles as a community hall for summer functions.

Sports Service Centre and sports grounds

The central facility at the sports and camp grounds, the Sports Service Centre provides kitchen, washroom and shower facilities. The building, located at the north end of Nelson Street, can be accessed from both sides to accommodate both campers and ball players at the same time. The facility is complete with a meeting room and the kitchen doubles as a concession booth for ball tournaments.

Canora's sports grounds include one senior baseball field and four slo-pitch/minor ball fields. All of the ball fields are fenced with chain link and have been recently upgraded.

Campgrounds

The campgrounds, located at the north end of Nelson Street, feature nine electric and two non-electric sites with provisions for obtaining potable water and a sewer dump. The adjacent Sports Service Centre contains washrooms and showers for campers.

Walking trail

Work has developed a 6 km walking trail and bicycle path that travels through the entire community. More information is available from the leisure services office.
